Kaczka Dziwaczka {eng. Duck the Weirdo}
an illustration for a children's book by Jan Brzechwa and his poems for children, a school project for book/magazine making.
Almost every child in Poland grew up on his poetry, by standard it's part of school curriculum,
I personally owned a tiny children's book of his poems, then I found that most of J.B's poetry is actually rather dark and emotional and bit gory,
but he wrote a lot for kids too - he got most popular with his wacky rhymes for kids,
his children's poems are rather odd too if not simply weird,
I guess censorship didn't think his poems about animals doing strange things and some dying and having the worst of luck was not bad for children,
but it weird-ed me out when I looked at them form a point of view of a grown up today,
The poem 'Kaczka Dziwaczka' - "Duck the Weirdo" or "the Odd Duck" or "Silly Duck" is about a Duck that does everything oddly and extravagant, the story goes like so:
the odd Duck lives next to the river but rather likes to take walks, one time she went to a barber to by cheese, or to a pharmacy to buy milk, or to go buy post stamps from a washer lady, all the ducks didn't like her and her behavior, she laid hard boiled eggs, wore a ribbon on the top of her head, and to a much annoy to other ducks she would comb her feathers with a toothpick, and so on with strange behavior, finally a merchant came along with the idea to turn the Duck into a dinner, so a Cook started cooking the Duck as is in a roasting pot, but everyone stared all stunned as dinner was to be served, cause as reviled the Duck had turned into a roasted Hare, and the poem ends with a pun/comment that "she Was That Weird!"
now how is a story like that supposed to be for children?
Still... a Big recommend, go search for Jan Brzechwa for some of the weirdest rhyming stories ever!
